Rebrand reflects the online media group’s dominance in the vertical content sector and provides new leverage for mokono’s existing blog platform and publisher network

Germany – Berlin, 3rd May 2012: mokono, Germany’s largest blog network and one of the leading publisher networks in Europe acquired by Populis in 2011, has today announced its rebrand to Populis (www.populis.com). The rebrand of mokono will strengthen the company’s image and leadership in key European markets while giving the bloggers and publishers registered on the expansive network stronger visibility and reach.

mokono’s rebrand to Populis will allow the company to benefit from full integration into a larger European network of premium media properties, to expand into new European and International markets, and to offer more attractive online advertising solutions to advertisers worldwide from one of Europe’s largest publishers of quality, vertical content to premium websites.

Reflecting the company’s activities and ethos, the new name pulls together both brands’ core values of a multinational, innovative and entrepreneurial publishing community and hints towards the human side of the web, where authentic user and consumer opinion in a multilingual environment is enhanced by social media integration.

With high visibility networks under the its umbrella including Excite Europe and Blogo the new Populis branding resonates strongly with mokono’s personality: young, pioneering and thought-leading, while the logo depicts a world of media created and shared daily by the Populis team.

Bloggers registered on the mokono network will continue to benefit from the same premium blogging, marketing and advertising products and services they have been enjoying in the past, with the added bonus of the Populis brand association.

Now present in over 20 European and International markets, the innovative online publisher produces quality content in over 8 different languages, using the social web to further engage and distribute to its passionate communities. mokono’s existing business and advertising partners will continue to have access to the same extensive portfolio of premium online and social media advertising products and services while also benefiting from increased reach and importance under the Populis umbrella for advertisers.

A combined geographical presence in over 20 international markets and a larger reach in key markets including Germany and the UK allows Populis to offer even more attractive advertising solutions to advertisers, brands and publishers including pioneering, highly-customisable advertising packages across its entire network of premium blogs, websites and web portals with products ranging from display, event and product testing as well as innovative social media advertising solutions.

With over 35 million unique monthly users across 600 wholly owned and operated websites in 8 languages puts Populis in a unique position among online media companies. Multiple award wins including Deloitte Fast 500 EMEA #7, Winner of Deloitte Fast 50 Ireland, Media Momentum Awards, Red Herring Europe 100 Winner and the enviable position as European leader in social, vertical content, mokono’s rebrand to Populis will increase its visibility with an easily recognizable name and identity, while strengthening its space in an increasingly competitive market sector.

Luca Ascani, Co Founder and Chairman of Populis said, “Populis is a fast growing media company, gaining ever more recognition in the global content market. Rebranding mokono to Populis is a key step forward for Germany’s largest blog network, as it will benefit from the strength of a well known online publishing brand. In order for mokono to compete seriously in a global marketplace we needed the strength of a brand that reflected the company strengths and positioned us correctly. We’re looking forward to increasing our reach in both European and international markets as a result.”

POPULIS

9th February 2012

7th February 2012 – Populis, Europe’s largest online vertical media publisher, has today announced the acquisition of one of Brazil’s most well known web portals, Cidade Internet, for an undisclosed sum, firmly establishing its position as a pioneer in Brazil’s booming content production sector (www.cidadeinternet.com.br).

The acquisition, which strengthens the media group’s global reach with two additional offices in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and will include an additional staff of 30 by year end, is a strategic move to increase market share in Brazil, where Populis already generates over 2.6 million unique monthly users and 10 million pageviews via its Blogo network.

Together with a burgeoning online population spending $6.5 billion in 2010 and growing 40% year on year, the online advertising sector in Brazil has become one of the most interesting globally, in particular since the country overtook the UK as the world’s 6th largest economy at the end of 2011.

Cidade Internet is one of Brazil’s oldest web portals, providing information, entertainment and web services to its users for over 12 years and provides Populis with a perfect platform on which to build premium vertical content offerings on a growing network already attracting 120 million pageviews and over 30 million visits a month.

This latest acquisition adds a further 10 web properties and an extensive vertical network to its Brazilian operations, which already includes some of the country’s top blogs such as FofocandoBlog, AutomovelBlog and DasmariasBlog.

Populis now owns and operates over 600 websites through its media brands Excite Europe, Blogo, Blogosfere, and Cidade Internet as well as 700,000 websites in the mokono network. The properties collectively drive over 35 million monthly unique users keen to engage with its dynamic content totalling over 35,000 items every month.

“We are very excited by the acquisition of Cidade Internet in Brazil,” says Luca Ascani, Co Founder and Chairman of Populis. “The country’s economy is bucking the global recession trend and the population of 195 million provides a huge domestic marketplace with spending power. We will be investing significantly into our Brazilian operations during the coming year and expect the market to quickly become a key revenue stream for the group.”

“Brazil is experiencing tremendous growth and the population is excited by the opportunities offered by the digital economy. It is the right time to open operations in a growth market and we are delighted to become part of Populis. The acquisition provides the group with a key asset in South America, and by integrating Cidade Internet fully under the Populis umbrella, we benefit from unrivalled digital publishing expertise – both in content production, distribution and monetisation,” said Rodrigo Tigre, Country Manager Brazil, Populis, who joined the Group from the digital media company Bolsa de Mulher.

Cidade Internet will be fully integrated into Blogo, Europe’s leading vertical content network, and will provide a single entry point to the vibrant professional blogs and websites within the whole network. Investments into content production and an expert sales team will continue throughout 2012

POPULIS
